About Us
The General Title Insurance Company has been in the business of selling title insurance since 1925. Today, General Title operates as one of the largest regional title insurance underwriters in the United States and is incorporated in the State of Indiana and licensed by the Indiana Department of Insurance. As one of the largest, independent title insurance underwriters in the Midwest, General Title takes pride in its ability to provide competitive title insurance products and competent services to the real estate community through its family of title insurance agents.
General Title is currently licensed to issue title insurance policies in Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania. We are committed to growing with our title agents. Consequently, additional expansion efforts are on the horizon.
General Title has a simple business philosophy. We do not compete with our title insurance agents. While many title insurers include both independent and direct operations in their business portfolio, General Title does not. We operate solely through our independent title agents leaving the business of title insurance to our agents. General Title also supports independent land title associations such as the National Association of Independent Land Title Agents (NAILTA – www.nailta.org) and state independent land title associations such as the Ohio Association of Independent Title Agents (OAITA – www.oaita.org) and the Indiana Association of Independent Land Title Agents (IAILTA – www.iailta.org). Independent land title associations help represent the interests of independent land title agents through their advocacy efforts and provide valuable continuing education courses at low or no cost to their members. These tools help connect like-minded independent title agents from across the United States who seek meaningful representation at the national and state levels.
Our underwriting staff possesses over 60 years of combined legal experience in the areas of real estate and title insurance defense. This experience has played a major role in helping to shape the landscape of real estate law through such notable cases as:
Mortgage Electronic Registration Sys. v. Odita, 159 Ohio App.3d 1, 2004 Ohio 5546 (reinforced the limitations of filing improperly executed mortgages in Ohio)
First Union v. Harmon, 2002-Ohio-4446 (upheld the use of equitable subrogation to gain mortgage priority for our Insured)
OC Property Management, LLC v. Gerner & Kearns Co., LPA, 2008 WL 4263563 (Ohio App. 8 Dist.), 2008 Ohio 4709 (reinforced the economic loss rule as a bar to sue title insurance company for negligence absent contract)
We have on-site attorneys who are available at any time to answer questions or provide underwriting guidance to fit your particular needs. We pride ourselves on the accessibility of our staff and the courteous response that we give to problem solving title insurance issues.
